Mary Jo Hennecke

October 19, 1944 — May 26, 2026

East Bernard, Texas

Mary Jo (David) Hennecke, a woman of profound faith, trailblazing leadership, and fierce devotion to her family, passed away, leaving a legacy of service to the East Bernard community she loved so dearly.

Born on October 19, 1944, at Schuman Hospital in East Bernard to Alphonse D. and Mary (Valigura) David, Mary was a lifelong resident and a proud 1962 graduate of East Bernard High School. She continued her education at Wharton County Junior College, earning an Associate’s Degree in Business and Sociology.

Mary was a woman who didn't just join organizations—she led them. A devout member of Holy Cross Catholic Church, she served on the Parish Council and was a dedicated member of the KJZT. Breaking barriers, she served as the first female officer of the KJT and the East Bernard Brahma Booster Club. Her energy was a staple of the local culture, especially through her active involvement in the Klobase Kolache Festival and the Holy Cross Bazaar.

Throughout her life, Mary was known for her sharp mind and work ethic. Her career spanned roles with Dr. Schumann and EE Otto in the Cotton Buy, and she served as Office Manager for EB Grain and the Practice Manager for the Larry & Jack Wilkinson Optometry office. Alongside her husband, Raymond, she co-owned and operated East Bernard Butane for over 50 years..

In 1962, Mary’s life changed forever when she was introduced to Raymond Hennecke by Mary Ann Morse at Riverside Hall. They were married at Holy Cross Catholic Church on September 26, 1964, beginning a partnership of 61 years built on faith and mutual devotion.

Of all her titles—officer, manager, leader—her favorite by far was "Bippy." As a grandmother to Lauren and David, she was their greatest champion. She relished every moment of their lives and was profoundly grateful to see both graduate from high school and to witness her granddaughter graduate from college in May.

Mary was preceded in death by her parents and her younger brother, Alphonse "JR" David. She leaves behind her devoted husband, Raymond; her beloved children, David (Ross) and Travis (Maria); and her two precious grandchildren, Lauren and David Hennecke, all of whom will carry on her legacy of fierce love, faith, and service. She is also survived by her brother, Raymond David, and his wife, Margie.
