Johnny Mack Byrd

Johnny Mack Byrd passed away on January 13th, 2026, in Eagle Lake, Texas (one week shy of his 85 birthday) with his family by his side. He was born on January 20th, 1941, in Bay City, Texas, the son of Carlos Daniel (Dan) Byrd and Elba (Lloyd) Byrd.

Mack was a loved husband, father, grandfather, and friend. He went into the Army at the age of 18 and served his country in Korea before settling into a successful career as a builder, a skillset he learned at an early age working alongside his dad. A private pilot, he enjoyed flying his Cessna 177, loved hunting, fishing, and also visited most of the United States. He was a man who lit up a room, loved hard, took pride in his work and always had a joke to tell. His children inherited his sharp sense of humor, his stubborn spirit, and his love of dancing. Mack loved his dogs, Baby and Furball, and you could always find them sitting on his lap or nearby trying to steal a bite of any available treats.

Mack is preceded in death by his parents, and three siblings. He is survived by his wife Linda and his four children, Michael Byrd and wife, Rose; Melanie Hulbert and husband, John; Merrie Ruleman and husband, Chris; and Miranda Byrd. He has six grandchildren, Joshua and wife, Alejandra; Brittanie and husband, Vítor; Zachary and wife, Candace; Justin and wife, Emily; Torin; Ashlynn. His five great-grandchildren include James, Axton, Ayden, Adoreé, Charlee, and one great-grand-baby due any day. He is also survived by five siblings, Dannelle Williams and husband, Charlie; Judy Zerjack and husband, Chic; Seretta Robinson; Ted Byrd; and Ned Byrd.

Visitation will be held on Sunday, January 18, 2026, at 12:00pm. Funeral Service will be held on Sunday, January 18, 2026, at 1:00pm. All services will be held at First Baptist Church in East Bernard, 619 Fitzgerald St., East Bernard, TX 77435. Burial will follow at Lissie Cemetery.
